plight of organic farmers in the United States: trying to survive in the American economy when paired against imports from markets where labor is cheap and perhaps rainforest lands are clear-cut for cattle grazing or to grow soy and coffee more cheaply. Fair labor issues, even within the United States, are another concern of conscientious consumers. In answer to such labor concerns, Mesh and colleagues started the Agricultural Justice Project (agriculturaljusticeproject. org), which is developing social justice standards, a certifi cation system and a label for farms and food businesses in organic and sustainable agriculture. The fi lm and discussions with its producers left me with a renewed sense of belief in the folks who fi ght to defend the publicly-scrutinized USDA organic label. Rather than simply thinking about what issues might be more important than or “beyond” certifi ed organic, the fi lm opens one’s eyes to the signifi cance of “organic AND beyond”—a perspective that starts with the question, “Is this the best choice I can make, environmentally and socially?” Central Floridians can catch the documentary fi lm What’s Organic about Organic? this fall when it returns as part of an outreach tour to promote awareness and raise funds for Florida Organic Growers. More information and the trailer can be found at whatsorganicmovie.com and foginfo.org
