NEWS, GOSSIP, EVENTS AND STUFF FROM THE HAIRY – AND NON-HAIRY – WORLD

HAIR HERO

Do you know who was the very first hairstylist to be paid for editorial work? If you don’t, you need to find out pronto. Born in the Bronx in the 1930s, Ara Gallant was one of New York’s top hair colourists, working out of shopping paradise Bergdorf Goodman. In the mid 60s he was approached by Vogue to work on fashion shoots and worked with some of the greatest photographers, including Irving Penn and Richard Avedon. Today his influence is seen everywhere; that whole ‘hair flying all over the place’ look? Ara started it. He was working with Richard Avedon on a shoot with supermodel Twiggy in 1966 when he first created the effect. But much like our very own Desmond Murray, Ara soon took up the camera himself, which is when the magic really happened. He soon began shooting celebrity portraits for Interview magazine as well as Playboy and Rolling Stone – a recent exhibition of which was formed, with a massive 16,762 images, spanning 14 feet! – and in the 80s, decided to go into directing. Sadly, for the hair, fashion and photography worlds, Ara committed suicide in 1990 in Las Vegas, but his memory, and stunning work, has been brought to life in the pages of Ara Gallant. Written by David Wills, with a foreword by the legendary actress/model Anjelica Huston, the book is an engaging tribute and a brilliant illustration of just how integral hair is to the

fashion industry.
