shot 12-under for the week. That’s a pretty good score any time. I’m more than happy with it and it’s well-rec- ognized play. If you look at the results now, you’d see, “Oh, he shot 67 on Sun- day,” before you saw what Greg shot. It was a special round for me, the lowest round of the weekend and the greens were particularly
rock hard and super fast. Under the circumstances of the day and the whole atmosphere and the severity of the golf course, that was what I call as
good as it gets.
TALK ABOUT THE PROCESS OF OVERHAUL- ING YOUR SWING WITH DAVID LEADBETTER. WAS THAT FOR THOSE PRESSURE-PACKED
FINAL ROUNDS? Yes, that was. I led the Open in 1983 with nine holes to play and blew up. I had a great year in ’83, I was European No. 1, but by the end of ’84 a little voice was saying I didn’t have it. I didn’t have what I wanted to take my game to another level.
I started working with Leadbetter at
Muirfi eld Village in May of ’85. That was pretty dark. I call that the dark age because you’re heavily criticized. You were No. 1 in Europe and now your game is going south and can’t make the

cut. It’s tough because you’re probably being paid to play the event—we have appearance money in Europe—and then you’re missing the cut and letting everybody down. Sponsors are starting to pull from you and all your manager would do is come around and bring you doom and gloom all the time. I’d start believing it was going to
come right and I’d go to the next tour- nament and I’m four over after nine. I’d never recommend you do it like that again because I did it the old fashioned way—I went and beat golf balls. There’s
