Argentina is several hundred miles farther south than Walker Bay, South Africa, making the Ushuaia golf course the southernmost in the world. I’ve been to both places, albeit not to play golf, and I was MUCH colder in Ushuaia.

SHOULD JEANS BE ALLOWED IN GOLF?

This debate about wearing jeans is yet another social phenomenon of the 21st century—the attack and eradication of all traditions, norms, customs and practices in the name of individual right of “liberty.” Yes, it is a free country we live in but when and where do we stop and say, yes, let’s leave some history, tradi- tions and customs alone. Golf is the only sport that I know of where you are expected to call a penalty (foul) on yourself. Some of the “luster” has

worn off due to the unfor- tunate events in late 2009 but I am one for retaining some sense of continuity. I am sure those who advocate the absolute right of an individual to wear whatever he pleases would not be so happy if I wore jeans or even well-pressed Dockers to his wedding, would he?

NCGA competition has enabled me to play top tier amateur golf on great courses, against great competition. We have the amateur tour right here in our own back yard.”

2009 Wins:

The Olympic Club member’s Master Division title was his third in that event and his 10th overall NCGA championship, putting him in elite company of double-digit NCGA title holders. But perhaps the San Diego State alum’s greatest accomplishment in 2009 was qualifying for the British Senior Open, where he travelled to Berkshire, England to compete against the likes of Tom Watson and Greg Norman.

legendary pal Casey Boyns makes it extra special. I have the utmost respect and admiration for everyone involved with the NCGA which allows us to play in so many quality events. The NCGA family has been such a huge part of my life for more than 25 years now, and I look forward to challeng- ing myself again in 2010.

NCGA PLAYER OF THE YEAR

It has been a complete and utter thrill to have won my fourth NCGA Player of the Year award, and to tie my

EXTREME TEE SHOT

In the recent issue a brief article appeared regard- ing two members of the TaylorMade-Adidas staff selected to golf six extreme golf courses, among them the Ushuaia, Argentina Golf Club, the southern- most golf course in the world. It was my pleasure to visit that course last month en route on an expedition to Antarctica. As a member of the

NCGA, I thought it might interest you that two days following my visit to

Ushuaia and upon reaching Antarctica across the Drake Passage, I disembarked by zodiac craft from my ship to Weddell Sea ice sheet on the Antarctic Sound. On that ice sheet, and to the delight of my guide and fellow ship- mates, I executed a tee shot. The latitude of this location was 63-degrees south, just about the Antarctic Circle. My expedition leader said he’d never known of any other golf shot that far south.
