Thurrock Sea Cadet Unit (pictured left) is an
excellent example of young people maximising
their opportunities. These cadets are using skills
they have learned through cadets to maintain and
BTEC First Diploma in Music
support their training ship. At the same time they
gain an internationally recognised BTEC First Diploma
Registered Pass Merit Distinction
Qualification for their efforts. This carries weight on a

CV and gives people external to the Cadet Forces a
better understanding of just what has been achieved.

Lieutenant Commander Donald Briggs, MBE, CVQO’s
adviser for the BTEC First Diploma in Engineering
(Maintenance) was this year awarded the Sea Cadet
Medal for especially meritorious service to the Sea
Cadet movement for setting up the Sea Cadet Training
Centre HMS Gannet, in Scotland, the hub of BTEC
Engineering.
BTEC First Diploma In Engineering
This key skill is always in short supply. Through CVQO
young people in the Sea Cadet Corps are able to gain
a Level 2 Engineering Qualification.
