Three scientists float on the Pacific Ocean. Tey are inside a small underwater ship off the coast of the country of Costa Rica. Te men are heading to a mountain called Las Gemelas.


The small underwater ship is called DeepSee.


Te mountain is underwater! It’s called a seamount. It is many hundreds of meters below the ocean’s surface. Tere is little light to see by. But the ship’s bright lights shine on the top of the seamount. Tey see corals and sea fans.


As they sink further, the scientists begin to collect data. What else lives here? What will they see in the dark? A video camera catches a school of fish. Tey also see a shark.


Te ship touches the top of the seamount. It is very dark here. Te men only have a few minutes to look around. Ten their ship must go back to the surface again.


On the way up, the ship’s lights flash on tiny creatures called plankton. It’s a beautiful end to an exciting dive!
