The High-Flying God

The Aztecs and Mayans had a god named Quetzalcoatl (sounds like ket-sahl-koh-aht-l). He was the god of wind and rain. A crown of quetzal feathers sits on his head.

A Crown of Feathers

The quetzal's tail feathers were more valuable than gold. That's why the Aztecs and Mayans made feather headdresses. They wore them like crowns. The Mayan people loved quetzals. Killing one was not allowed.

Quite a lot of Quetzals

The quetzal is the national bird in Guatemala. It's shown on the country’s fl ag. It's even seen on some postage stamps.
