The goal seemed simple. Go to the country of Cameroon. Visit 10 lakes. Learn what lives in each. I wasn’t thinking about the challenges and dangers I might face. I was thinking about fish.
I am a scientist, and I study fish. T e lakes I wanted to study were formed when volcanoes erupted. T e volcanoes made large holes that filled with water. T ey are called crater lakes.
Each of the lakes is separate from the other. Most have never been studied by scientists. I had some ideas about what I might find. I thought I would find new species here. Maybe I would find fish that lived only in this part of the world. If so, then these places would need to be protected.
So, that was the plan. My first stop would be Lake Edib. Not many people know this place. Aſt er I arrived in Cameroon, I set out to find it. It took me five days. I came to a small e n
village near the lake. r t e l
