The North Pole

The North Pole is not over land. It is located on a giant layer of ice that fl oats on the Arctic Ocean. The ice shifts and moves. In winter, the ice covers a huge area, about one-and-a-half times the size of Canada. In summer, it shrinks by more than half. The ice also gets thinner as it melts. Scientists say that climate change is causing more of the ice to melt than in the past. When Jade went to the pole in 2016, the ice cover was just 1.4 meters thick. In the previous year, it had been 1.7 meters thick.
