Getting to the Goal Jade’s dream began a year ago at home in Melbourne, Australia. Jade listened to her dad’s adventure stories. T en one day, she learned about the Polar Hat Trick. T is was the name given to hikes across the North Pole, the South Pole, and Greenland. It takes place in three separate trips. Few people had ever tried it and fewer still had succeeded. Jade wanted to try. Once the goal was set, Jade’s dad helped

her prepare. She went with her dad to a fi ve-day snow survival camp. It was there that Jade fi rst learned to ski.

Jade worked up to cross-country skiing about 15 kilometers a day, dragging along a heavy sled. Back home, she worked out in a gym aſt er school. Once a week, she went to a training club where a special room mimicked the low levels of oxygen found in thin mountain air. T ere, she trained on a treadmill and a spin bike. Jade also trained on the beach. She

dragged heavy tires on ropes through the sand. It felt like dragging a sled, just as she would do in the Arctic. Aſt er months of training, Jade was ready.

As part of Jade’s strength training, she dragged tires across the beach.
