We’re nearing the eastern end of The 606, in the old Polish neighborhood of Wicker Park. The sun has gone down, and LED lights illuminate the trail. It’s a cool, comfortable night, and many people are still out walking and biking. The neighbors we’ve met are just a handful of the millions who’ll pass under the Milwaukee Avenue arches now that the trail is open. There are two more access parks in the making; the fresh landscaping will take root and new art will replace the work we saw today. But while the faces of The 606 will change— along with the diverse and dynamic communities around it—the trail will stand as a lasting connection between them, and a welcome to each one.
