E DAMEN ARTS PLAZA
PATRICK MCCAFFREY
We’re about three-quarters of the way down the trail when we reach the Damen Arts Plaza. A large, open space with ample seating and a view of the bars and restaurants on Damen Avenue, it’s a great place for people-watching—and dog-watching, too. When passers-by see medical student Patrick McCaffrey with his
dog, Sherlock, they tend to ask him three questions: What breed? How old? And, is he going to get much bigger? In fact, a group of people on the trail approach Patrick just a few minutes before we do to ask him those very questions. The answers: He’s a Shetland Sheepdog. He’s four months old. And yes, he’ll get bigger—but mostly furrier, Patrick says.
“He’s a smart, neurotic dog. My mom really enjoys how feisty and argumentative he is; she says he’s very much like me as a kid. I end up sounding like a dad every now and then when he doesn’t listen to me. My girlfriend has caught me saying, ‘Sherlock, what did I just tell you?’ when he ignores me. He’s a herding dog, so up here on the trail he wants to chase after cyclists and runners because he thinks they should go only the speed he’s going. This is a crash- course for him—bikes coming out of nowhere, small children, strollers. But he’ll get used to it.”
