GLORIA DATA

(WITH SON, ETHAN)

HUMBOLDT BOULEVARD OVERLOOK E

Walking east, we come in sight of one of the most striking features of The 606: the Humboldt Boulevard overlook. The wide, tree-lined roadway is part of a 26-mile network developed in the mid-1800s— an attempt to realize a vision of Chicago in line with its motto, “City in a Garden.” At the time, the boulevards were an innovation that inspired imitators in cities across the country. Today, the overlook is The 606’s nod to its predecessor. Gloria Data and her six-year-old son, Ethan, are together on the overlook’s stadium seating, which faces north down the boulevard. They’re watching the traffic below. “How many white cars do you see?” Gloria asks Ethan. They count, and when they answer at the same time, they shout, “Jinx!”

“We were going to go play basketball, but then I asked Ethan if he would rather shoot some hoops or go on the new trail. We decided to go up on the trail. When Ethan was born we lived in East Village, close to this spot. I used to come up here to relax and enjoy the view. Now we live right down the Boulevard, in Little Village. I like the diversity of the neighborhood—it’s good for Ethan to be around. He likes playing video games, but I try to take him out as much as I can to do nature walks and outdoor activities. He keeps me young and agile. And entertained!”
