CONNECTING YOU TO WHAT MATTERS

For more than 40 years, The Trust for Public Land has worked to connect people to nature, parks, and each other. For every acre we con- serve, every park we help create, we ask our- selves: how will this land improve people’s lives? How can we connect as many people as possible to this wonderful place?

These connections are the focus of this issue

of Land&People magazine. In Chicago, we helped transform a former elevated rail corridor into The 606, a park and trail linking four neighbor- hoods—and 80,000 residents—to recreation, the outdoors, and their fellow Chicagoans. Rural communities from New England to California are affirming traditional connections to their for- ests by buying them for the public—protecting jobs, close-to-home recreation, and the opportu- nity for future generations to learn and explore in nature. And cities like Richmond, California, are revitalizing green spaces in an effort to con- nect residents in park-poor neighborhoods with the resources for better health and wellness. Both in urban centers and beyond them, it has never been more important to establish and en- hance these natural connections. In a time when more and more of us engage with each other electronically, The Trust for Public Land is proud to be building parks and conserving land where children and families can play, garden, picnic, hike, swim, and spend time together outdoors— in person. We could not do this important work without you, our donors and supporters. Page 59 of this issue of Land&People shows just some of our ac- complishments together this past year—such as the number of acres conserved and parks built. But the true measure of our success lies in the

way these places improve peoples’ lives and health—revealed in stories like the ones you’ll read here.

Thanks to your support, millions of people now live within a 10-minute walk of a park, play- ground, or protected natural area created with help from The Trust for Public Land—a benefit we’re working to extend to all Americans. To further our efforts, we recently launched our first-ever capital campaign—a special opportuni- ty for our supporters to affirm the power of place in their lives. See page 60 to learn more. As we approach the year-end season of shar- ing, we hope you will consider helping us con- nect more people nationwide to parks, health, and the landscapes that inspire them. And we hope that you’ll have the opportunity to spend time outdoors, nurturing a connection to nature with the people you love.
