DEMYRON HAYNES

By the access ramp at Rockwell and Maple- wood, we watch a procession of runners pause to sip at the drinking fountain. The 606 is already a favorite workout spot for urban athletes: on the right side of the trail in both directions, a two-foot-wide section of blue rubber provides a springy surface similar to a track. Beats concrete. A bright bouquet of yellow sunflowers

catches our attention. It’s tucked under the free arm of a young man studying a trail map. “I was at a nearby coffee shop, and I took the trail back,” he tells us. “But I don’t remember where to get off.” We ask him about the flowers.

“They’re for my girlfriend—I’m using the trail as a shortcut to her house. We met at church in Humboldt Park, and we’ve been together for about three months. She’s very passionate about God and her community. I’m an assistant at Breakthrough Urban Ministries and she’s a school- teacher. I admire her love for her stu- dents. I just delight in her. My first time on the trail was actually with her parents, about two weeks ago. I love to walk on the trail when I need to think something through. It’s also a way to build community, to just chill out with people who are walking by.”
