CURLING ON TV ‘Curling Night in America’ returns in 2017 By Terry L. Davis, Editor F

riday night will once again be curling night as “Curling Night in America” returns for a third season in January on NBC Sports Network (NBCSN).

In partnership with the World Curling Federation, NBC Sports and the

U.S. Olympic Committee, the nine-part series will be taped Dec. 1-3 at the Duluth Curling Club in Duluth, Minn. Similar to last year’s format, three episodes of men’s competition, wom-

en’s competition and mixed doubles will air beginning in January (exact schedule to be announced). Te U.S. teams, skipped by John Shuster and Nina Roth, will take on rinks from Scotland, Japan and China. USA’s mixed doubles duo will be Tabitha Peterson (St. Paul, Minn.) and Joe Polo (Du- luth, Minn.), 2016 World Mixed Doubles bronze medalists. When the TV schedule is confirmed we will post

it on the USA Curling website at www.usacurl.org so clubs can begin planning viewing parties. Many member clubs took advantage of the Friday night coverage with great success by staging Learn to Curl events around the time period in which the episodes aired. Roth, the two-time U.S. women’s national cham- pion, will team up with Peterson, Aileen Geving

(Duluth, Minn.), Becca Hamilton (McFarland, Wis.), and Cory Christensen (Duluth, Minn.). Christensen will fill in for Peterson when her mixed dou- bles competition overlaps with the women’s round robin action. Shuster’s team includes fellow 2016 World Bronze Medalists Tyler George (Duluth, Minn.), Matt Hamilton (McFarland, Wis.), and John Landsteiner (Duluth, Minn.). Scotland will be represented by Hazel Smith and Ally Fraser rinks. Japan returns with Yosuke Morozumi in men’s competition and Tori Ko- ana on the women’s side. China will be led by Rui Liu and Bingyu Wang for team competition and Ba Dexin and Wang Rui in mixed doubles. Scotland’s mixed doubles team is still being determined. Japan’s duo of Eri Araki and Taku- ma Makanae are set to battle for the “Curling Night in America” mixed doubles title. Titles will be awarded in each division and to the overall country with the most accumulated points. China has won the overall title the past two seasons. We hope that “Curling Night in America” will con-

tinue to be one of NBCSN’s top-rated Friday night shows in 2017. Tank you for tuning in. Go USA! Q

by everyone involved in a genuine, non-condescending manner. New curl- ers simply don’t know and are usually anxious to learn. If you don’t coach new players, it is largely your fault when they subsequently violate the rules and etiquette of our Grand Ol’ Game. Do your part to help them learn. Everyone will benefit for years and years to come. Until next time – Good Curling! Q
