t has been confirmed today that the Chinese Curling Association will host its first World Women’s Curling Championship, in the Chinese capital Beijing, in 2017.


Te event will be played between 18 and 26 March (2017), with the exact


venue still to be confirmed. Today’s (Monday 19 October) announcement comes just three months


aſter the 2022 Winter Olympics Games were named to take place in the city, of which the World Women’s Curling Championship is expected to play a key part in its promotion, as well as raising the profile of curling in Asia. World Curling Federation President, Kate Caithness, said: “It is a good


time for winter sports in Asia with the next two Winter Olympic Games set to be held in Pyeongchang, Korea in 2018 and in Beijing in 2022. Te award of the 2017 World Women’s Curling Championship to Beijing reflects this and rewards China’s hard work in developing our sport. “Tis will be the first time a World Women’s Curling Championship will


be staged in China, however aſter a very successful CPT World Men’s Curl- ing Championship here in 2014 we look forward to working with our part- ners and sponsors to stage another first class championship for the world to enjoy.” Te World Women’s Curling Championship is held annually in March


and is the pinnacle of the women’s curling season. Each year 12 teams have the chance to compete for the title – eight from the European Zone, two


from the Americas Zone and two from the Pacific-Asia Zone. In 2017 Chi- na, part of the Pacific-Asia Zone, will automatically qualify as hosts. To date, China have won three World Women’s Curling Championship


medals, with their best result coming in 2009, when Wang Bingyu’s team won Gold, in Korea. China has also won Silver – 2008 – and Bronze – 2011 – medals. Mr SUN Xuecai, Director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports,


said: “Te World Women’s Curling Championship 2017 will act as a warm- up event for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games and will be an important tool to promote winter sports in our country. “Tis championship will also help improve the skills of our national


women’s curling team.” Switzerland are the current World Women’s curling champions, win-

Hawaii fundraiser helps support curling

(Hibbing, Minn.) were the key promoters of the sport on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 in Honolulu. On Sept. 30, the athletes made a live appearance on Hawaii News Now and then visited Farrington High School where they gave a pre- sentation on the sport. In the aſternoon, the athletes introduced the sport to ASB employees at the Ice Palace. Te next morning the Farrington HS kids visited the Ice Palace for three hours of instruction and interaction with our Olympians. Tursday evening featured the main charity event, which net- ted $100,000 for the Ka Pa’alana Homeless Family Education Program. Te program serves families on Oahu’s Leeward Coast by helping them become more self-sufficient and preparing the children for success in the classroom. Te charity curling fundraiser featured two heats of 20 teams repre-

Te Olympians visited a local high school to talk about the sport, taught two school groups as well as ASB employees to curl, all before hosting the main charity event on Oct. 1.
