UP FRONTA LETTER FROM THE EDITOR 30 Under 30: Fun and Fundamental u W
e are quickly approaching a time of year that is enjoyable and entertaining for all of us at Manufac- turing Engineering. Nominations for our 30 Under 30 honors start pouring in and we will start poring over them. As we do, we get to learn about exceptional people.
We also get to “meet” some of them—even if only over the phone—when we interview the 30 nominees who will be honored as possessing the potential to become the future leaders of manufacturing. This will be the program’s fi fth year. During that span some of the honorees have fi nished high school (a number of 14-year-olds have been honored), completed their degrees (many of them postgraduate) and founded their own compa- nies. The 120 folks honored to this point are eager, diverse, dedicated and, we fi nd, delightful. The 30 Under 30 program is not just fun for us, however. It is fundamental in many ways. It recognizes and encourages young people who can make a difference, whether on the shop fl oor, in an engineer- ing or R&D department or in the boardroom.

It brings attention to the potential of manufacturing to young people who might never before have considered a career in the industry. Honorees serve not just as role models for other young people, but as mentors as well. And we would like to encourage mentoring as much as possible. The program also allows organizations—whether schools, shops or corporations—to take stock of the young people they work with in order to assess the talents, intelligence and potential those young people pos- sess and realize what a tremendous natural resource they have at their disposal.
I would like to encourage the 2013 30 Under 30 honorees to e-mail me and let me know how and what they’ve been doing over the past four years. Their success and achieve- ments will go a long way in overcoming the idea that young people have no interest in or aptitude for manufacturing. Nominations for the 30 Under 30 Class of 2017 are open
through February 15. To learn more about the program and how to go about nominating someone, visit http://advanced-
