here has been a changing of the guard at Advanced Manufacturing Media. Sarah Webster, who had been our editor in chief since November of 2011, has left us to pursue another opportunity. Sarah brought numerous changes big and small to what was then known simply as the publications arm of SME. She took us into the digital media age. Thanks to her we have a Web site worthy of the Society, a weekly eNewsletter that is compelling, podcasts with many of manufacturing’s leading lights, and a substantial presence on Facebook and Twitter. This issue marks my fi rst as editor in chief of Manufactur- ing Engineering. On my watch we will deliver timely, informa- tive, actionable information about manufacturing. I have been employed as a communicator for my entire
professional life. While much of the time I have been a jour- nalist, I also have spent time in automotive public relations and as the director of marketing intelligence for a global ad agency. On the journalism side I have been employed by the Detroit News and Crain Communications. I came to SME in February 2008 from the American Ceramic Society, where I was editor of that organization’s Bulletin.

Manufacturing is part of my background, too. I put myself through college working one summer for a company that supplied steel blanks to the auto industry. Fittingly, the next three summers were spent at an automotive stamping plant.
Having spent time in plants when manufacturing truly was a “smokestack industry” I can appreciate how far we have come to get where we are today. And having covered manufacturing for the last eight and a half years I can appreciate just how accurate the term “advanced manufacturing” is and the intriguing prospects that are on the horizon.
As we advance toward that horizon Manufacturing Engi-
neering will cover everything from metalcutting to 3D printing based on a philosophy I learned from a crusty old “ink- stained wretch” at the Detroit News: Get it fi rst. Get it fast, Get it right. And get it out. That old saying is just as important in this digital age as it was then. And, just like then, the most crucial of those four points is to get it right. That’s what we will continue to do to serve you, our readers, no matter what form of media you prefer.
