Industry Prevails, Even with Minor Setbacks


A


s this year’s comprehensive industry trends report by the Teal Group will tell you, the aerospace and defense industry garners roughly $700-$900 billion annually and is clearly “the healthiest industrial segment of the world economy.” Teal’s annual report also indicates that, while the industry is still growing, its growth rate downshifted significantly in 2015 “threatened by several looming macro- economic trends,” as well as lackluster economic growth in emerging markets and weak energy prices. While there have been challenges, a big win for the A&D


industry are the advanced manufacturing techniques and tech- nologies making their way into their plants/facilities. In particular: MachiningCloud Inc. is now offering a way to digitize cutting tool data, but the big question is whether or not the cutting tool manufacturers will get on board. See how a new multi-brand app can take the guesswork out of tool selection, so programmers can quickly make smarter tooling decisions. To date, end-users have built more than a half-million tool assemblies for over 100,000 different jobs. Cisco’s IoT Vertical Solutions Group shares how com-


mercial aerospace and defense manufacturers are changing their model from “produce at any cost” to a focus on opera- tional efficiency. How are they doing that? By digitization! This transition, from machines that are isolated production centers to digitally connected machines that participate in a dynamic environment, occurs in three phases: visualizing, learning and optimizing. largest growth in industrial metal 3D printing over the past few years and how it can largely be attributed to the A&D industry.
