MANUFACTURING SOFTWARE
Major reasons business leaders should be interested in the cloud include not just saving money, but also reducing
risks and improving productivity, Trudell noted. Cloud ERP deploys faster and lowers implementation costs, as well as making application refreshes easy with constant upgrades. Cloud ERP can reduce risks, offer- ing higher levels of security, uptime, and staff requirements, and pro- ductivity is improved with applica- tions staying current.
ERP software developer SAP SE has teamed up with Robert Bosch GmbH on cloud- based systems for IoT data analysis, aiming to boost Bosch’s manufacturing production effi ciencies and improve cost controls.
“The main pillars of innovation in ERP today are centered around scaling the cloud, a very dynamic user experience and workfl ow, intelli- gent applications which are data- aware, enabling a vibrant ecosystem using APIs, cross-device communi- cation [IoT], predictive analytics and intelligence, and support for secure high-volume transactions,” said Himanshu Palsule, chief product
and technology offi cer and executive vice president, Epicor Software Corp. (Austin, TX). Manufacturers must address the challenges in managing an
increasingly overwhelming volume of data that operators need to convert into actionable intelligence, Palsule said. “It is impor- tant to note that IoT data will be gathered and disseminated by a stream processing application. A manufacturer’s ERP system must have the ability to integrate with the stream processing application to allow for specifi c, fi ltered data to be passed to the system, allowing the ERP platform to make better decisions.” Next-generation ERP solutions leverage new technolo- gies to bring information to those who need it, at the moment they need it, in a form that they can use, Palsule said, and in a way that they can take action immediately, anywhere. “The value comes from increasing the reach of ERP via cloud and mobility, dashboards and analytics, to assist every part of an organization and make it as usable on the shop fl oor as it is on the top fl oor.”
The economics of cloud deployments are undeniably compelling, moving ERP from a capital to operational ex- penditure, Palsule said. Some of the more hidden economic
benefi ts of the cloud he cited include: t Not being as capital-intensive as an on-premises deploy- ment because of the subscription-based pricing model.
t Better and more instant scalability, allowing clients to add (and sometimes remove) users to their system on
