“Where are the women?”

NCAA Champion Magazine poses that question in its Winter 2017 edition, diving deep into data that demonstrates a sharp decline in the percentage of female head coaches in college women’s sports.

And while college lacrosse has seen its share of successful male coaches — most recently Elon’s Josh Hexter and Virginia Tech’s John Sung, whose teams are enjoying breakthrough seasons in 2017 — the sport remains an exception to the trend. According to “Women in Intercollegiate Sport,” a national study conducted by Brooklyn College professors R. Vivian Acosta and Linda Jean Carpenter, 86 percent of NCAA women’s lacrosse head coaches in 2014 were female, down only slightly from 90.7 percent in 1977. The national average across 24 sports during that same timespan dropped from 58.2 to 43.4 percent.

Kerstin’s door. Again, she was a rock for her team, her staff, her peers — everyone.”

The Blue Devils went all the way to the final four, bowing out against North Carolina in the NCAA semifinals. The season left a lasting impression on Kimel’s players.

“Kerstin always talks about wearing many hats,” Maurer said. “She’s a mom, she’s a coach, and now she’s a survivor. In this life, I’m waiting to see a hat that she can’t wear because of how much courage she has in every aspect of her life.” USL
