WHISTLE
Women’s lacrosse fans will enjoy the candor and insight of “Behind the Whistle,” the offi cial blog of the IWLCA and an unfi ltered medium for some of the sport’s most respected minds. George Mason coach Jessy Morgan, one of just two black head coaches in Division I women’s lacrosse, wrote about her experience embracing her racial identity at a predominantly white college (she played at Virginia) and in a predominantly white sport. Also on the blog, Converse College coach Megan Smith shared her story about fi ghting osteosarcoma and how her life changed after hearing the words “you have cancer.” Among colleagues reaching out to support Smith was Duke’s Kerstin Kimel, a breast cancer survivor whose story appears on page 34 of this edition.

The NCAA Division I Council will vote this month on a measure that would effectively end early recruiting in lacrosse, which would come as a relief to the many vocal opponents of this trend. Adding fuel to their fi re, Recruiting Rundown’s Ty Xanders reported March 7 the earliest boys’ commitment ever on record. Eighth-grader Eric Spanos of Malvern Prep (Pa.) committed to Maryland.
