The Elite Skati ng Academy in Burton, Michigan, hosted a National Skating Month event at the University of Michigan-Flint outdoor rink. The Academy held a skate-a-thon and raised money for K9s For Warriors. “Our coaching staff decided to do this fundraiser for the K9s For Warriors’ worthy cause, as it helps not only rescue dogs, but also veterans recovering from various disabilities sustained during their military tours. It was a great success and so much fun,” Jacklinn Brayan, director of Elite Skating Academy, said.

Daniel is a champion


Daniel Cabrera, 10, is a cancer survivor, and received a kidney transplant at age 5. But one would never know this by watching him glide across the ice at Paramount Iceland in Para- mount, California. His smile says it all.


“He loves ice skating classes because he learns new things,” Darlene Sparks, director of fi gure skating at Paramount, said. “He enjoys skating around the rink, feeling like a bird fl y- ing side to side.”


Cabrera, a resident of Maywood, California, enjoys skating with his older sister, Karina, on Saturdays. He recently met former Olympic champion Ilia Kulik, and hopes to someday meet Olympic champion Scott Hamilton.


Community grant application


deadline May 31 The application deadline for U.S. Figure Skat- ing’s six Community Development Grants for the 2017–18 membership year is May 31. Grants will be awarded after July 1.


These grants will provide money to selected U.S. Figure Skating member clubs, Learn to Skate USA programs and U.S. Ice Rinks Asso- ciation member facilities to develop commu-

off ered at NARCE U.S. Figure Skating is seeking passionate in- dividuals who want to increase their skating business and revenue, learn proven reten- tion strategies and defi ne and improve their leadership. Skating directors, instructors, rink managers and club board members are invit-


ed to attend the Skating Director Program at the 15th annual North American Rink Confer- ence & Expo (NARCE), May 16–19 in Colum- bus, Ohio.


The 2 1/2-day seminar focuses on the seam- less administration of successful program- ming and ways to build a healthy customer base, retain skaters and continue to move them through the pipeline of U.S. Figure Skating programs. Attendees will complete this program motivated and equipped with a comprehensive tool kit that allows for ef- fective leadership and business strategies to implement a successful and fi nancially viable fi gure skating program.
