FRIENDS OF FIGURE SKATING

For 15 years, Friends of Figure Skating (FOFS) has supported figure skaters of all ages, from Team USA all the way to those in Learn to Skate USA. Friends of Figure Skating also comes with membership benefits such as a subscription to SKATING, tickets to the FOFS breakfasts for Skate America and the U.S. Championships, U.S. Figure Skating apparel and much more. Today, we Focus on Friends and share the story of one of our generous donors.

Janice and Terry Collins, of Knox, Indiana, have been FOFS members since 2006 and contribute at the White level. They joined at the U.S. Championships that year and have only missed a single U.S. Championships event since. Janice grew up near a lake that froze over every winter, and had a mother who loved to involve the family in skating. In fact, Janice doesn’t even remember learning to skate because her mother started her so early. To this day, Janice and Terry follow in those footsteps and skate with their kids and grandkids as a family. After teaching special education for 34 years, Janice retired and decided to take figure skating lessons at the Ice Box Skating Rink in South Bend, Indiana.

FOCUS ON FRIENDS Janice and Terry Collins of Knox, Indiana

Despite being a seasoned skater, she wanted to understand the technique of the sport better, and she feels that this has led to a deeper appreciation of figure skating. Janice and Terry love to follow skaters of all ages and admittedly “live and die” with skaters as they progress through their careers.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BE A FRIEND OF FIGURE SKATING? I joined at U.S. Championships and I’ve met so many Friends through the program; it now seems like a big reunion every year. The friendships I’ve made with fellow Friends and all the young skaters we’ve met are so wonderful.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FIGURE SKAT- ING MOMENT? It would be easy to say seeing Michelle Kwan win at World Cham- pionships in 2003 (in Washington D.C.). But honestly, some of the greatest moments are when a skater comes out of nowhere. We see so many struggle and work so hard; it’s wonderful to see them persevere.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PERK/BENEFIT OF BEING A FOFS? We love to go to the breakfasts and let the kids know we support them. It’s so great to see them let their hair

down, and to say thank you for representing our country so beautifully.

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE SKATER OF ALL TIME AND WHY? I always loved Michelle Kwan growing up. We have such an appre- ciation for all the skaters after following for many years. Even if they are never champi- ons, it’s special to watch any skater have their best skate.
