Vienna to host FIVB Beach
World Championships Artists and musicians have a long tradition of memorable performances in the Austrian city of Vienna. Two of the United States’ most decorated beach volleyball players will get their chance to write their names in the great city’s history books when the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships travels to Austria from July 28 to Aug. 6. Both Phil Dalhausser and
Kerri Walsh Jennings will be try- ing to win FIVB world titles 10 years apart, a mark of longevity never accomplished at the world championship or Olympic level before in the sport of beach vol- leyball.
The FIVB Beach Volleyball
World Championships began in Los Angeles in 1997 and has been held every two years since. American teams have won the
event five times, but only once on the men’s side – Dalhausser and Todd Rogers in 2007 in Gstaad, Switzerland. Walsh Jennings captured
the title threes times with Misty May-Treanor (2003, 2005, 2007).
will be the most important beach tournament of the season. “The FIVB and the entire vol- leyball family is looking forward to experiencing the warm welcome and fantastic hosting credentials that Austria has already showed us when the country staged the 2001 Beach Volleyball World Champi- onships,” Graça says.
The announcement was part of
a dream for Jagerhofer to bring the world championship to Austria. “The anticipation is great,” he said. “To bring the World Cham- pionships to Austria has been a long-time dream of ours and we are looking forward to making this a reality. I am convinced that Vienna will set new standards in every way.”
Miyashiro joins U.S.
Women’s coaching staff Tama Miyashiro has kept with her philosophy of giving back when she accepted an assistant coach position with the U.S. Women’s National Team in March. Miyashiro joined the U.S.
Women’s National Team as a libero in January of 2010 after a stellar career at University of Washing- ton.
She retired from the game as
April Ross, who will play with Walsh Jennings in Vienna, is the last American to win a gold medal in the world championship. She won with Jen Kessy in 2009 in Stavanger, Norway. There will be 48 teams per gender competing for the title of world champions with a maximum of four teams for each country per gender. Walsh Jennings, who is the winningest player in women’s beach volleyball history, will make only her second appearance in an FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship with Ross. The pair placed ninth at the event held in The Netherlands in 2015. Walsh Jennings and Ross placed fifth in the season-opening FIVB event in Ft. Lauderdale in February, which was also an event promoted by Hannes Jagerhofer. The Austrian promoter is known for adding flare to his events. U.S. Olympian Casey Pat- terson, who has played in many
events promoted by the Austrian, said he expects the Vienna event to live up to what is expected to be unprecedented promotion. Jagerhofer brought in Lipizzaner horses from the famous Span- ish Riding School at a March 30 press conference to announce the countdown to the Vienna tourna- ment. “You know if Hannes is pro- moting the event that it is going to have a special flare that will make it great for the players and the fans,” he says. “It’s alway first class at his events. There is always something that makes it really fun for the fans.” Patterson is in a postion to qualify with new partner Theo Brunner. Patterson and Brunner took at ninth at Ft. Lauderdale opener, but defeated reigning Olympic and world champions Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt of Brazil in the process. FIVB President Dr. Ary S.

Along with her silver medal won at the 2012 Olympics, Miyas- hiro helped Team USA win gold in three FIVB World Grand Prix events (2011, 2012 and 2015). She was also part of the 2011 FIVB World Cup U.S. squad that won silver to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games.

to continue working with the Women’s National Team,” Mi- yashiro said. “It’s an honor to be able to represent USA as an athlete and now as a coach. I’m extremely grateful for the relationships and experiences I’ve had over the years and am excited I get to continue being part of this USA Volleyball
