[NATIONAL JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

RECORDS FALL AT NATIONAL JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

By Kevin Farley Nearly 400 of the nation’s best athletes

descended on the Crown Center Expo Hall in Kansas City, Missouri, for the 2017 Nike National Junior Championships powered by Rogue Fitness. Excitement was

abundant as American

records fell during each of the three days of competitions. C.J. Cummings (69kg) continued his streak

of American record-breaking performances. Playing to a packed house, his 139kg snatch set new Youth, Junior and American records. He nearly broke his clean and jerk total with a 184 attempt. “I rushed that jerk a little bit,” Cummings, 16,

said after the session. In the women’s 53kg class, Jourdan Delacruz

set new junior American records in the snatch and total. She had held the previous records. Thirteen-year-old Julia Yun smashed her own American records in the women’s 90kg ses- sion. Her 68kg snatch, 87kg clean and jerk, and 155kg total were well above the records she set three months before at the American Open Championships in Orlando, Florida. “I had fun,” the seventh grader said mo-

ments after stepping off the platform. The National Junior Championships also

served as the final qualifying event for the 2017 Junior Pan American Championships, 2017 Junior World Championships and 2017 Youth World Championships. A selection committee met after the event to determine who made those teams. In the women’s 75kg session, the battle for

a potential spot on one of those teams was on full display. During the clean and jerk, Juli- ana Riotto and Jessie Bradley duked it out for gold. Bradley ended up victorious during the back-and-forth session, winning gold with a 117kg lift. The future is bright for USA Weightlifting,

with a strong stable of athletes poised to suc- ceed on the world stage in 2017 and beyond.
