[AMERICAN OPEN SERIES

WELCOMING THE INAUGURAL YEAR OF THE AO SERIES

By Anna Resman

2017 MARKS THE START of the USA Weightlifting American Open Series, a new annual series of three events leading up to the American Open Finals. This series is replacing the former standalone American Open Championships.

Why the change? The events provide an opportunity for all age and weight categories to gain more platform experience across the year and an opportunity for those who no longer meet raised totals on our traditional competitions to still compete at the national level.

What weight classes are offered? The American Open Series offers the senior, junior, youth, and masters weight categories.

How do I qualify for the American Open Finals? Athletes can qualify for the American Open Finals by either meeting the qualifying totals or qualifying through the American Open Series. In the series, the top three overall in each weight category, the top three youth by Sinclar and the top three masters by Sinclar-Malone-Meltzer will qualify for the American Open Finals in that year.

How do I become an American Open Champion? The series works on a points basis, with the series champions named at the American Open Finals. Points, per the IWF Technical Rules, will be award- ed for 1st to 25th place at each American Open Series, with the American Open Finals worth 2x points. If there is a tie, the tiebreaker will be snatch and clean and jerk points, followed by highest average placement, and if still tied, average Sinclair; if still tied, amount of series events attended.

Are these meets eligible for American records, ranking and

stipend eligibility? Yes, you may achieve any of these items at an American Open Series event. Drug testing activity has been requested for each com- petition with the USADA (United States Anti- Doping Agency).

Where and when are the American Open Series events this year? American Open Series I – Reno, Nevada – March 16 to 19 American Open Series II – Miami, Florida – July 28 to 31 American Open Series III – Grand Rapids, Michigan – September 8 to 10 American Open Finals – Anaheim, California – December 7 to 10
