TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS YEAR’S DOUBLE DIP

Watch the 2017 Pan American Championships, Compete in the American Open Series II By Anna Resman

Prior to the 2017 IWF World Championships in Anaheim, Cali-

fornia, the international weightlifting community is first headed to the United States for the 2017 Pan American Championships. Competition will take place from July 23 to 30 in Miami, Florida. The last time that USA Weightlifting hosted this event was in 2009 in Chicago, Illinois. This event, in addition to the 2018 Pan American Championships, will determine qualification for the 2019 Pan American Games. Last year’s Pan American Championships occurred in Carta-

gena, Colombia, at the beginning of June. Stakes were espe- cially high in 2016, as it was the final qualification event for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero. Prior to Cartagena, the U.S men’s team had not received any Olympic berths. They needed to place seventh or higher to secure a place. The men’s team tied for third and Kendrick Farris (Shreveport, La.) earned the ticket to Rio. Farris swept the 94kg class, winning gold in the snatch, clean and jerk, and total to be crowned a 2016 Pan American Champion. The women’s team placed second overall. Other notable performances included: • Kathleen Winters – 48kg – bronze in total • Morghan King – 48kg – bronze in snatch • Mattie Rogers – 69kg – silver in clean and jerk, bronze in snatch, silver in total

• Marissa Klingseis – +75kg – bronze in clean and jerk, bronze in snatch, bronze in total

• Donovan Ford – 105kg – second in clean and jerk, second in total

• Caine Wilkes – +105kg – second in snatch, second in clean and jerk, second in total

Lifting on home soil this summer, Team USA will look for high

team placements and aim to make it to the podium as many times as possible throughout the week. The event will take place at the Miccosukee Casino & Resort,

on the southeastern edge of the Florida Everglades. With the American Open Series II event occurring at the same venue im- mediately following Pan Ams, this is a great opportunity to plan an extended holiday to Florida. Not only can lifters of all ages and abilities participate in the open national meet, but before- hand they can also watch some of the best lifting of the Western Hemisphere. With a big home country crowd, we can build the en-

ergy and excitement for our Team USA lifters as they tack- le their big lifts! American Open Series II is planned for July 28 to 30. For more information on the event, visit the official event page.
