Geothermal Heat Pumps Help You and KEC Save Money

If you want to reduce your heating and cooling costs by as much as 50 percent, help Kay Electric Cooperative (KEC) control wholesale power costs and benefit the environment, install a geothermal heat pump.

Geothermal systems are proven energy savers for co-op members, but as more members go “geo,” they can also lower your co-op’s system-wide demand for electricity, which is a determining factor in wholesale power costs.

A study by power supplier Western Farmers Electric Cooperative found that widespread geothermal use could reduce generation capacity needs and postpone the need to build new power plants. More on this topic can be found in the June issue of Oklahoma Living, your statewide electric cooperative magazine.

If you’re considering a residential geothermal system, KEC offers rebates of $1,000/ton on closed loop geothermal heat pumps (15.9 EER/3.03 COP) and open loop systems (18 EER/3.6 COP). For details, please visit www.kayelectric. coop or call KEC at 800-535-1079.

$25 is hiding in this issue!

Please read your newsletter carefully. If you spot your account number hidden in these pages, please contact Kay Electric immediately to claim a $25 credit on your electric bill. If no account numbers are claimed, the prize money will carry over to the next month for a maximum bill credit of $50.

from the top Peak Days Are On The Way

Heeding Kay Electric’s peak alerts will help lower power costs for all members.

I

’m old fashioned in many ways, but I must admit that instant communication tools—smartphones, email, texting, social media, and Skype— can be useful. This summer, Kay Electric will begin more comprehensive communication efforts with our members. Many electric cooperatives in Oklahoma set summer usage peaks, usually on very hot days when folks crank up their air conditioners. These peaks drive up the cost of electricity for everyone. Kay Electric’s wholesale power bill reflects these increased costs, which appear on your electric bill the following month as an increasing power clause adjustment (PCA). For electric cooperatives, any increase or decrease in wholesale

power costs must be reflected on our member’s electric bills through the PCA.

Beginning immediately, we will use the Kay Electric Facebook page, website (www.kayelectric.coop), Twitter, and Snapchat to communicate peak alerts. We can also send text messages if you will take a moment to set your alerts. You can do this by texting, “peak days” to 55000.

all of our electric bills. Any power cost savings achieved by lowering the Kay Electric system-wide peak applies directly to your electric bill. It’s not retained or used by your co-op.

By Tim Rodriguez, CEO kay electric cooperative

As member-consumers, we all need to know when and how to save on electric costs during the most expensive times of the year, day, and hour. In 2018, we plan to put a rate structure in place that will allow more direct saving to members that make diligent efforts to save during the expensive peak usage periods. The new rate will more equitably reward the members who make efforts to control usage during peak times. We aren’t asking members to completely abstain from using electricity on

peak days, only to try to avoid using multiple appliances at once.

“We all need to know when and how to save on electric costs during the most expensive times of the year, day, and hour.”

Peaks typically occur between 4 pm and 7 pm. During these times, we encourage you to reduce your energy use as much as possible. Wait to run dishwashers and washer/dryers until after peak hours; grill outdoors rather than heating up the house; or turn the AC thermostat up a few degrees until the peak has passed.

Remember, these efforts can reduce

When each home sets their individual peak usage, during the few hours of the year that peaks are set, establishes a fixed cost that Kay Electric pays over a 12-month period. Traditionally, cooperatives and all electric utilities have just absorbed these peak costs and eventually raised their

kilowatt-hour charge to cover them. Now, with improved technology, utilities can zero in on which consumers are using the most or least power during peak hours, and charge accordingly. The result is more fair and equitable billing for all members.

If you have questions concerning Kay Electric peak alerts or how to sign up for peak alerts, please call your co-op at 800-535-1079 or email contact@kayelectric.coop
