Humtown, Youngstown State Unveil 3-D Printer Youngstown State University (Youngstown, Ohio) and
Humtown Products (Columbiana, Ohio) unveiled a 3-D sand printer at Humtown’s new 3-D mold manufacturing facility located in the Columbiana County Port Authority’s industrial park in Leetonia. It is the only 3-D sand printer in the state. T e printer, valued at nearly $1 million, is the S-Max in-
dustrial production 3-D printer from ExOne. It weighs more than 16 tons and prints large, complex sand cores and mold packages directly from CAD data. T e printer, secured via an Ohio T ird Frontier grant to YSU and America Makes, will support the metalcasting industry throughout Ohio. T e facility also will serve as a classroom and laboratory for

engineering students from YSU and other universities and com- munity colleges in Northeast Ohio. T e 2,800-sq.-ft. climate- and humidity-controlled facility in Leetonia was designed to meet production process specifi cations for the operation of the printer. T e facility also houses offi ce space and a 40-seat, auditorium-style training room that will be used to teach AFS’ 3-D Printing Optimization course. Also included is an area for working with and training YSU students and staff . “We are thrilled to partner with Humtown, America Makes and others to bring this cutting-edge manufacturing technology to the region,” said Jim Tressel, president, YSU. “Like any good partnership, there are several groups that will benefi t from this venture, not the least of which are our YSU students, who will gain hands-on experience working side- by-side with industry and academic experts at this facility.” Mark Lamoncha, president and CEO, Humtown, also
was excited. “Ahead of technology comes three-dimensional thinking
and leadership; that’s the kind of thinking and leadership we are seeing with YSU and America Makes,” he said. “As a team, including the expertise of YSU faculty and students, we look forward to refi ning this new technology, making the metalcasting industry even stronger.”
