INDUSTRY NEWS Eck Industries Part of Team to Collaborate and Develop

New Aluminum Alloys Eck Industries, Manitowoc, Wis-

consin, was part of a collaboration that has developed new aluminum alloys that are heat tolerant and easy to work with. Eck teamed with researchers from

the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Lawrence Livermore National Labo- ratory, Ames, Iowa, to develop the alloys that contain cerium. T e team is part of the Critical

Materials Institute, which is an energy innovation hub created by the U.S. Department of Energy. Managed out of the DOE’s advanced manufacturing offi ce and based in Ames, the Institute tries to increase the availability of rare earth metals and other materials. “Most alloys with exceptional proper-

ties are more diffi cult to cast,” said Da- vid Weiss, vice president for engineering and research and development, Eck Industries. “But the aluminum-cerium

Engine heads are one of the applications where aluminum-cerium alloys can be used. “We have these rare earths that we

need for energy technologies,” said Or- lando Rios, researcher, ORNL. “When you go to extract rare earths, the majority is cerium and lanthanum, which have limited large-volume uses.”
