AMRC Castings Unveils New Research Facility in UK AMRC Castings, part of the

University of Sheffield’s Ad- vanced Manufacturing Research Centre, Sheffield, England, was unveiled as the first custom-built steel facility to be commissioned in the United Kingdom since the early 1980s. The new advanced steel cast-

ing facility is able to produce cast parts with a finished weight of up to 2,866 lbs. (1,300 kg). The $793,000 (£600,000)

investment will allow the AMRC Castings group to conduct re- search and product development projects in collaboration with its industrial partners. The organization develops

new casting technologies and provides design and manufac- turing consultancy services for aerospace and other high-value manufacturing sectors. The new facility also will en- able the advance of research into the composition of materials. “Keeping the UK at the fore-

front of steel castings technology is the only way to ensure the capability survives,” said Ryan Longden, operations manager, AMRC Castings. “It’s our aim to support steel foundries at home in the UK and around the world and castings users wanting to push the boundaries of current casting processes.” The new advanced steels cast-

ing facility is fully operational and being used to contribute to a collaborative project for the energy sector. “Using the new facility

alongside our Megashell Process allows us to put our technical expertise to full use and con- duct pioneering research for the energy sector into producing cast steel components that are more cost and time effective to manu- facture,” Longden said. The Megashell Process is a ce-

ramic shell molding and casting process.

QCD-1 Porosity Measurement System

• Automatic measurement and recording of Specific Gravity / Sample Porosity in 15 seconds.

• Eliminates the need to cut and polish the sample to yield a very subjective estimation of gas level.

T.R.P. Vacuum Tester (True Reduced Pressure)

• Measures the absolute vacuum level, eliminating the need for daily/weekly/monthly calibration of the differential gage used on most RPT units.

• Fully automatic operation to pull the Absolute Vacuum to a target level of (+/- 0.20”Hg), run a timed cycle, and dump the vacuum.

• Users now include Extrusion Melters and Continuous Cast operations
