Zinc-Coated Iron Pipe Inhibits Corrosion for Cities Nationwide

in an aggressive environment and and sacrifi ces itself to protect the ductile iron cathode. T e corrosion byproducts form a layer between the annealing scale and the topcoat, creating a rugged barrier between the pipe and the environment. According to a news release, San Jose

Water Company is one of the fi rst utilities in the country to install zinc-coated pipe for its water supply. AMERICAN has also supplied zinc-coated ductile iron pipe to Mor- ganton, North Carolina, and Birming- ham, Alabama. “We are committed to ensuring our

customers have reliable and dependable water for years to come,” said Brad Boris,

an Jose Water Company (San Jose, California) has taken delivery of over 3,000 ft. of zinc-coated iron pipe from AMERICAN Ductile

water resources director, Morganton, North Carolina. T e San Jose system was made up

mostly of iron pipe, and portions of it have been around for 100 years, which is a similar situation to many other cities and municipal areas across the country. AMERICAN introduced zinc-coated pipe to the domestic market in 2015. T e zinc pipe has a coating of zinc

added to the outer surface. In addi- tion to its service life, ductile iron pipe with a cement-mortar lining inside is sustainable. “Iron pipe is made from recycled

iron and steel; requires less energy for pumping, and therefore is less expen- sive than plastic pipe to operate; and is the only pressure pipe to be SMaRT certifi ed by the Institute for Market Transformation to Sustainability,” said Maury Gaston, marketing services manager, AMERICAN. San Jose Water Company is not

alone in its need for upgrades and re- pairs to its water system, but it could be setting a trend. “San Jose Water Company is a leader in the water industry,” Gaston said. “Zinc- coated ductile iron pipe is the right choice– the wise choice–and utility customers will benefi t from it for decades to come.” T ere are other benefi ts as well. “Previous generations invested in the

water system so we could enjoy reliable water service,” said Craig Giordano, vice president of engineering, San Jose Water Company. “I believe that the use of zinc- coated ductile iron pipe is one way to provide long-lasting value.” Zinc’s effi cacy has been shown in

fi eld tests. One in Everglades, Florida, showed

that after 10 years and with intact polyethylene encasement, there was no corrosion pitting. AMERICAN Ductile Iron Pipe is a di- vision of AMERICAN Cast Iron Pipe. 
