EPA Reports on Automotive Sector Fuel Economy Performance T e Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA)’s annual report that tracks the average fuel economy of vehicles sold in the United States shows model year 2012 vehicles achieved an all-time high fuel economy of 23.6 miles per gallon (mpg). T is represents a 1.2 mpg increase over 2011, making it the second largest an- nual increase in the last 30 years. Fuel economy has now increased for seven of the last eight years. (2013 fi gures are not yet available.) Fuel econo- my has increased by 4.3 mpg, or 22%, since 2004. T e Obama administration’s
National Clean Car Program doubles fuel economy standards by 2025 and
cuts vehicle greenhouse gas emis- sions by half. T e goal is to reduce oil consumption by more than 2 million barrels a day—as much as half the oil currently im- ported from OPEC every day. “Light-Duty Automo-
tive Technology, Carbon Dioxide Emissions, and Fuel Economy Trends: 1975 through 2013” attributes much of the recent improve- ment to the rapid adoption of more effi cient technologies such as gasoline direct injection engines, turbochargers and advanced transmissions.
This lightweight, high pressure diecast aluminum transmission housing for a fuel-effi cient hybrid electric vehicle received an honorable mention in the annual casting competition featured in the May 2012 issue of Modern Casting.
