MTI Acquires Iron, Aluminum Casting Facilities Iron caster Metal Technologies


Inc. (MTI), Auburn, Ind., is expand- ing with the acquisition of Northern Foundry LLC, a ductile iron casting facility in Hibbing, Minn. In addi- tion, the company is adding alumi- num die and squeeze casting with the purchase of Jackson Die Casting LLC, Jackson, Tenn., and Minneapo- lis Die Casting LLC, Minneapolis.


T e combined operations, formerly comprising Key 3 Casting LLC, have approximately $74 million in annual sales and 300 employees. Terms of the sale, which was


fi nalized in December, were not disclosed. "We defi nitely see a long term


trend in the marketplace to reduce casting weight by engineering


smaller, lighter iron components or by utilizing lighter materials such as aluminum,” said MTI president Matthew Fetter. “T e Key 3 acquisi- tion not only provides MTI with a world class manufacturing footprint for meeting market demand but provides us with an excellent techni- cal and management team to execute our strategic plan.” All Key 3 Casting workers re-


portedly are being asked to continue with the company. Metal Technologies, a privately


owned company founded in 1997, employed about 700 before the acquisition and had more than $365 million in annual sales. T e company operates iron foundries in Auburn, T ree Rivers, Mich. and Ravenna, Mich. With this acquisition, MTI has estimated annual sales exceed- ing $440 million and employs more than 1,000 people. It provides metal castings throughout North America in the transportation, construction, compressor, small gasoline engine and other markets. 


Benton Foundry Adds Finishing Cells


Benton Foundry, Benton Pa., has


purchased two additional Foxall fin- ishing cells from Vulcan Engineer- ing Co., which feature ABB robots. Delivery and startup of the Foxall Model 424FS and Model 636FS with ABB Force Control is sched- uled for July. These will be the third and fourth robotic finishing cells at Benton Foundry. Benton was the first metalcasting


facility to purchase the control fea- ture in September 2010. It reported- ly improves quality and consistency and can reduce manual touch-up. Benton’s five-year plan is to


revamp its cleaning and finishing operations to meet the melting and molding capacity of up to 300 tons per day of gray and ductile iron. Benton Foundry is a fully automated green sand foundry that produces parts ranging from 1 to 250 lbs. 
