Mounting brackets were cast integral to the main housing by careful se- lection of the parting line and core construction.

• T e size (diameter or thickness) of the core with reference to the adjacent casting section thickness, its location with reference to the parting plane, and the ease of placing and securing the core into the mold are key con- siderations in deciding between as-cast and machined cored holes.

In aluminum, mechanical properties are directly pro- portional to the local cool- ing rate, which is driven by the section thickness. Thinner walls have better mechanical properties.

• In the transmission housing, proper wall thickness, which is a function of the overall size, casting process and desired tol- erances as-cast, was chosen and optimized to make the casting manufacturable through various design studies using casting process simulation.

• Parting and orientations were key to the success of high integrity casting production. T e interior was produced with a core, which was set into the drag (bottom) half of the mold.
