A problem that won’t register
PHYSICIANS HAVE TROUBLE WITH MEANINGFUL USE OBJECTIVE REQUIRING PUBLIC HEALTH REPORTING
«
William Gilmer, MD, says the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services should delay requiring a meaningful use public health reporting objective due, in part, to a lack of specialty registries needed to meet the objective.
O
ne day before the dead- line to establish his intent to meet a Stage 2 mean-
ingful use objective for 2016, Wil- liam Gilmer, MD, found himself in a state of limbo. The available routes the Centers
for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) laid out to meet objective 10, covering public health reporting, left Dr. Gilmer with unanswered questions, confusion, and a diffi- cult ethical consideration. To meet the reporting objective
for 2016, physicians must satisfy two of three possible reporting op- tions. One option doesn’t apply to Dr. Gilmer’s practice, and he says CMS didn’t define the second op- tion well enough for him to know whether he could meet it. The third option — active engagement to submit data to a specialized reg- istry — isn’t available to him yet, at least not in his specialty.
