This page: Class president Kristo- pher Koch is staying in San Antonio to train in internal medicine. Although the match process is nerve-wracking, he says the school’s capstone ceremony is meant to be “a day of celebration” for the four years of arduous work it takes to complete medical school. “And it’s great to hear so many people are staying in Texas.” TMA- supported legislation increased first-year residency slots in Texas by 100 in 2014 and 2015, with at least another 200 on tap for coming years.

Left, top: Nervous and excited, Nicholas Rojas listens for the master of ceremonies to call his name to the stage. He describes Match Day as “almost bigger than graduation because today you find out where you are going to be train- ing for the next four to seven years, and it’s your first job as a physician. It could change your life depending on where you end up, and it could determine the rest of your career.” He found out later he matched to his first choice: The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston’s anesthesiology residency program. Among matched U.S. seniors, 53 percent got their first choice, and 15.6 percent got their second choice, according to NRMP.
