During this rite of passage, known as Match Day, Texas Medicine joined more than 200 soon-to-be medical graduates from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Anto- nio (UTHSCSA) on March 18 as they found out which residency programs accepted them. Most wanted to stay in Texas, but not all got their wish, as the Texas Medical Association, Texas medical schools, and state lawmakers work to increase the num- ber of available slots to keep future doctors close to home and avoid a shortage in the nation’s fastest growing state. The 2016 match was the larg- est on record with more than 42,000 applicants vying for 30,000 positions nationwide, according to the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
