Right, top: About half of UTHSCSA students, including Andrea Cruz, will stay in Texas for their graduate medical education, and research shows that newly minted physicians are more likely to continue practic- ing where they train. Forty-nine percent of UTHSCSA medical students will be spread out over 31 other states and the District of Columbia. In addition to Texas, the five most popular states include New York, Florida, Colorado, and Oklahoma.
Right, bottom: Match Day is one of mixed feelings for some students leaving their home state of Texas to finish their medical training. Michael Hallenbeck and his wife, Angela, are moving to Rochester, N.Y., for his internal medicine- pediatrics internship. “I am beam- ing because I matched and this was my second choice. But opening that envelope and seeing that name, we weren’t prepared. We thought we were,” he said. “We knew ahead of time there weren’t enough [spots in Texas] because med-peds is not the most common specialty — but not the most uncommon specialty either — and there are only three programs in the state. So we had to apply to more than three to be com- petitive.” As medical school gradu- ation rates outpace the number of entry-level residency training slots available, Texas needs an additional 687 first-year positions by 2022 to achieve TMA and the state’s goal of having 1.1 slots per Texas medi- cal school graduate, according to Texas Higher Education Coordinat- ing Board projections.
