Here’s a closer look: 2016 Olympics


Ortiz hopes to represent Spain’s national team in the Summer 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His brother, Bruno, is also an Olympic swimming hopeful.


200 Medley Relay


Ortiz earned an NCAA championship in the 200-yard Medley Relay and was an eight- time NCAA All American, eight-time Big Ten Champion and All Big Ten three times while swimming as an undergraduate student at the University of Michigan. He also won six gold medals at the Spanish Nationals in December 2014. In April 2015, Ortiz qualifi ed for the summer’s World Championships after achieving the time standard at the Spanish Nationals.


As a sprinter (backstroke, butterfl y), Ortiz swims about 10,000 meters every four hours of practice. That’s nearly 11,000 yards, or just over 6 miles. On heavy training days, he will consume up to 7,000 calories.

Ortiz speaks four languages—Japanese, Spanish, English and Portuguese. He was born in Madrid, Spain, to a Japanese-Brazilian mother and a Spanish father, and raised in Tokyo, Japan.
