Joey Stinson, a student and fl edgling entrepreneur, coined the moniker on his Facebook page, declaring “Su-Mar is my homegirl!” with a graphic design he later made into a T-shirt. Student government also made a T-shirt featuring the nickname, asking WWSD (What Would Su-Mar Do?). The women’s rowing team named one of its boats after her. Martin reciprocated by holding a couple of farewell meet-and- greets called “Sweets and Selfi es with Su-Mar.” The party favor? A Su-Mar fl ashlight. “(Students) come here and
it just kind of opens their life up to new possibilities. And they’re open to that. And many of them are very giving of themselves, of their time and energy to others.

in the various departments on campus. “The non-traditional students get to me the most. ... I sit there and I watch the top student in nursing. And she’s got her little kids there and her husband and she’s crying, thanking them, because she spent the money on college. And it took her eight years. She’s one heck of a success, you know?” And yet in an academic world that measures success—and awards state funding— based on traditional graduation rates, that sort of story is overlooked. That’s where Eastern has an
advantage, Martin says. In addition to its long history of serving traditional students, it welcomes a
