After tying for fourth at the NCGA Public Links
Championship and earning a spot in a U.S. Open Sec- tional qualifier, Sacramento resident Zachary Solomon had a feeling he was on to something. The 27-year-old Whitney Oaks Golf Club employee was absolutely right, as he’d claim his first NCGA title after competing in tournaments for over four years. “I knew I had the game to win one of these,” said
Solomon, who’d earn the victory by posting a 2-under 69 despite cold, strong winds. “I wanted to scratch an NCGA championship off my list.” A sign that it would be Solomon’s turn at the top
came on No.4. He’d knock his drive out of bounds but ended up holing out from 105 yards out for par. But it was on the back-nine where he really came
through in the clutch. Following what would be a front- nine 37, he’d post a 32 that included four birdies and a bogey for a two-day total of even-par 143. His biggest birdie, which came on the 18th, helped
Solomon edge California Golf Hall of Famer Casey Boyns. Playing in the final group, Boyns came to the 18th just two behind Solomon. The longtime Pebble Beach caddie reached the green in two but his eagle putt to tie stopped short of the cup, leaving him with a 72 for a score of 144.
Also coming up short was first round leader and for-
mer professional Brett Viboch. Coming off a first round- leading 69, Viboch shot 76 to place third at 145.
