Another USGA Trophy for NorCal F

ollowing a lengthy dry spell, Northern California has sud-

denly become saturated with USGA championship winners. On May 25, Los Altos Golf and

Country Club member Andrew Buchanan and partner Benjamin Baxter, both teammates at Southern Methodist University, captured the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Champion- ship at Winged Foot. Buchanan’s win marked the

fourth national title won by an NCGA member in a span of 10 months. In 2015, USGA champion- ship winners were Clovis’ Bryson DeChambeau (U.S. Amateur), Olympic Club member Hannah O’Sullivan (U.S. Women’s Amateur) and Cool resident Karen Garcia (U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur).

Prior to DeChambeau’s victory,

the last Northern California player to win a USGA title had been 2007 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links champion Mina Harigae of Mon- terey. The last male to have won had been Stockton’s Ricky Barnes (2002 U.S. Amateur). For Buchanan and Baxter, the

U.S. Amateur Four-Ball was their only national championship. The duo, former teammates of DeChambeau, entered play with SMU banned from postseason play for a year due to violations. “This is kind of a replacement

for NCAA’s, and it turned out to be a much better replacement that we could have imagined,” Buchanan said.
