4. OLLANTAYTAMBO & MACHU PICCHU First, a walk through Ollantaytambo introduces the town’s traditional canchas, streets entered through stone doorways that lead to homes around a courtyard. Next board your train to Aguas Calientes, then a bus to your Machu Picchu lodge – adjacent to the Incan citadel. With a guide, spend the afternoon exploring the “Lost City,” 7,000-ft. high and isolated from the nearest village*. ECLECTIC CULTURE IN LIMA Sightseeing begins at Lima’s Museo Larco, where you’ll find an impressive private collection of gold and silver works created before Europeans had ever arrived in the Americas. THROUGH THE SACRED VALLEY TO CUSCO Don’t miss another look at Machu Picchu before it’s time to depart for Aguas Calientes and a visit to the central market, before boarding your train to Ollantaytambo. COLONIAL CUSCO & AN INCAN FORTRESS Head out into the Sacred Valley today to visit Sacsayhuamán, an ancient stone fortress, and then Awanacancha, a farm where you’ll find llamas and alpacas; learn about the colorful, traditional art of Peruvian weaving. Back in Cusco, whitewashed buildings, red roof tiles and colonial mansions reveal a rich Spanish heritage, built atop the archaeological ruins of an Incan city – sightseeing includes a visit to Cusco Cathedral.
