5. MATSUE’S BLACK CASTLE
Arrive this morning in Sakaiminato, the center of Western Japan’s fishing industry, for an excursion to Matsue, known as “the water city” for its river, canals, and setting on two lakes and the Sea of Japan. Weather permitting, you’ll take in the great view of the city and beyond from the Black Castle, the feudal fortress which presides over the city in solemn majesty. After lunch aboard ship there are two possibilities: choose to visit the Adachi Museum of Art with its extensive gardens and traditional Japanese art... or shuttle into Sakaiminato to pursue your own interests. 6. BUSAN, SOUTH KOREA
You’ll cross the Strait of Korea and arrive in Busan, South Korea midday. This morning is the perfect time to enjoy the amenities
onboard Le Soléal – perhaps enjoying the fresh air from one of your yacht’s six decks or stopping by the ship’s fitness and beauty complex. Dock in Busan and visit the Haedong Yonggung Temple, which bears the motto, “At least one of your wishes will be answered here...” You’ll also hear a private talk on South Korea’s relations with Japan, China, North Korea, and the USA. 7. A DAY IN NAGASAKI
Arrive in Nagasaki for a day filled with historic sights: the Nagasaki Peace Park, graced with notable monuments and memorials; the Atomic Bomb Museum; and Glover Garden, an al fresco museum memorializing the Europeans who settled in Nagasaki in the late 19th century. (Westerners began settling in Nagasaki when the Portuguese landed in the 16th century.) Sail on tonight. Your next port of call will be Kagoshima. Meals BLD
8. A VOLCANO, SAMURAI, AND SHOCHU Called the “Naples of Japan” for its location on a bay, Kagoshima lies on the southwestern tip of Japan’s southernmost main island, Kyushu. Ferry across the bay to see the volcano Sakurajima up close. A shochu distillery tour reveals all about sake’s prime rival; port-like shochu is the stronger drink! In nearby Chiran, wander the well-preserved samurai district’s stunning Chiran Samurai Gardens, and stop in at the Chiran Peace Museum for Kamikaze Pilots. Meals BLD
9. PEARLS AND SQUIRRELS IN UWAJIMA After an early lunch aboard ship, you’ll arrive in Uwajima for a rare chance to spend time in a rural Japanese community.
