EOS announces new advisory committees
The European Optical Society has launched new advisory committees in support of conference organisation and publication matters. The Conference Advisory Committee, chaired by Andreas Ettemeyer from the NTB University of Applied Sciences of Technology in Buchs, Switzerland, aims to strengthen the long-term planning and organisation of conferences, define procedures, give recommendations on co-sponsoring of events and so on. The Publication Advisory Committee is chaired by Patricia Segonds of University Joseph Fourier, France, and gives an insight on various publication matters, including promotion of JEOS-RP, defining procedures, and negotiating agreements with magazines and journals. The members of these advisory committees are active members of the EOS board of directors.

EOS celebrates 26 years T
he European Optical Society celebrates its 26th anniversary on 24 May. The society was founded in 1991. To celebrate this
milestone and history of the society, Anna Consortini gave an enlightening speech on the background and phases of the society and people that have been involved in the development of optics and photonics around Europe and beyond. Before 1984, the European Optical Committee (EOC) represented optics in Europe. In May 1984, the EOC joined the European Physical Society (EPS) to create its Optics Division. In 1986, Europtica (the European Federation for Applied Optics) was founded by the national optical societies of several European countries. In December 1986, a memorandum of
understanding (MoU) was signed between EPS, Europtica, and SPIE, in which the three parties agreed to jointly organise one major annual optics meeting in Europe. Thus began the ECO series of meetings, managed by the French organisation Europtica Services International Communications. The experience from these conferences demonstrated the need for a lean and efficient organisation of optical activities in Europe. Thus, in March 1990 the Board of the Optics Division unanimously voted for starting negotiations with Europtica in order to found the European Optical Society (EOS).

disciplines and their applications. EOS serves as the joint forum for all individuals, companies, organisations, educational institutions, and learned and professional societies, who recognise the opportunity and challenge that a common European base provides for the development of optics in its broadest sense. EOS now has members across Europe (see map).
