LEADER JESSICA ROWBURY

Strength in Europe

A call to unite might come as a welcome message amid the political happenings of late. This year, the European Photonics Industry Consortium (EPIC) surpassed 300 members, with 74 joining last year alone. The organisation now has members in 30 countries, ranging from small research groups and SMEs to technology giants. In the article on page 12, Carlos Lee

says that consortiums such as EPIC are vital for the European photonics industry to remain globally competitive, especially considering the growing competition from Asian photonics markets. ‘By bringing companies and people together, we can build the perfect team and have a better chance of meeting the global competition,’ he commented.

The photonics industry will be coming

together in June for the biennial Laser World of Photonics trade fair in Munich. Part one of our show preview starts on page 36; if you’d like to be included in part two, which will feature in the June issue of Electro Optics, send a summary of what you’ll be exhibiting at the event to editor.electro@europascience.com. Also in this edition, we have articles on smart surgery (page 14), cosmetics (page 18), optical coatings for use in space (page 24) and spectroscopy in horticulture (page 30).
