PRODUCT FOCUS SAFETY Smart safety
A round-up of the latest in laser safety, including upcoming training courses and products ranging from protective eyewear to complete enclosures
New athermalised windows (cover slides) from AdlOptica are intended to be applied in high power laser applications like welding or selective laser melting (3D-printing). Minimisation of thermally induced focus shift and aberrations stabilises operation of material processing equipment, especially those with beam shaping optical systems. When operating in conditions of static or dynamic laser heating, the clean or contaminated aThermoXX windows demonstrate <0.1 Rayleigh length focus shift and <1/4 wavelength wave aberration, which guarantee diffraction limited beam focusing. The windows have an athermalised design, a variety of dimensions, AR-coatings optimised for widely used laser wavelengths, and power density up to 3kW/cm², meeting the basic requirements of modern industrial high power laser equipment.

The Laser Insitute of America (LIA) is the professional society for laser applications and safety. The association is holding a Medical Laser Safety Officer training course in Los Angeles on the 5 and 6 March. The course is designed to give the operating room personnel a basic foundation in laser biophysics, tissue interaction and laser safety. Laser safety protocols will be addressed
Lasermet offers an extensive range of laser safety equipment. The company designs, manufactures, installs, commissions and certifies laser safety equipment and systems worldwide, conforming to the requirements of the laser safety standard EN 60825. Lasermet’s services include FDA/CDRH Registration reports, Laser Protection Advisor support, laser safety training, core of knowledge training, power meter calibration, UKAS accredited laser testing, laser safety audits, laser hazard analysis and risk assessments. The company sells laser safety eyewear and filter windows – and manufactures audible and visual warning devices such as dual colour LED signs. It makes: Optoblok optical table guards; Orca laser blocking curtains, screens and roller blinds; laser safety enclosures and Laser Castle laser safety cabins with passive or failsafe Laser Jailer
power levels: convection cooled aluminium beam dumps are rated up to 50W and are available in 0.75- and 2-inch aperture options, suitable for low to medium power applications. For higher power lasers, there are water cooled dumps rated up to 1,000W, with the option of a 2- or 4-inch aperture.
according to the ANSI Z136.3 Safe Use of Lasers in Healthcare standard, AORN recommended practices, and ASLMS practices. Instruction is accomplished through didactics, and discussions.

For high power applications the first line of defence before laser safety curtains or eyewear is a beam dump. Laser Components offers a range of beam dumps suitable for different
active guarding protection systems, including Glaser Jailer active windows for multi-kilowatt laser welding robots; LaserSafe PC laser safety calculation and classification software; and laser shutters and interlock controllers to ISO 13849-1 PL‘e’.

The beam dumps use a dual cone design, coupled with a special non-reflective coating, designed to eliminate back reflection. Furthermore, they are designed not to reflect the beam outward, even if the non-reflective finish has been eroded by exposure, for safety and added peace of mind.
